Feeding the Adolescent Brain
Step 1
Start your child on a good multivitamin-mineral and supplemental program. The vitamin should have a healthy dose of B-vitamins, and at least 250 milligrams of magnesium, 250 milligrams of calcium, 25-35 milligrams of zinc, 5-8 milligrams of iron and 200 milligrams of chromium.
A separate supplement of essential fatty acids (fish oil with a high DHA) should be given. Give one to two grams a day along with the other supplements.
A good supplement program will reduce the cravings of sugar and inappropriate food choices and help balance the blood sugar. They will be taking several capsules a day so give them with breakfast and dinner.
Step 2
Ask you teenager to drink a protein shake before going to school each morning. Make sure the protein does not have aspartame or sucrose. The powered should contain 15-20 grams of protein a day. Add one to two tablespoons of flaxseed oil into the blended drink. In a blender, combined:
1-1 ½ c fruit (frozen is best) berries, bananas, melon, e.g.
1 c fruit juice or plain water or rice/soy milk (more if needed)
1 Tbsp. flaxseed oil
1 serving of protein powder
Blend to smooth.
Step Three
Purchase a water or athletic bottle for your teenager. Have them drink one to two containers a day. You can flavor the water with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.
Step Four
Prepare a “rainbow colored” salad for your child at least once a day. You can add some tuna fish, sliced turkey or chicken to add some extra protein and make it a complete meal. Ask then to use an oil base dressing for the extra health benefits.
Step Five
Ask your child to reduce the soft drink they drink by one-half. After they have been reduced, ask them to eliminate them completely, or only have one a week.
Step Six
Stop buying snacks that are junk food. Purchase instead fresh fruit and vegetable sticks for snacks or purchase your snacks from a health food store. When you bake, reduce the sugar content by one-half.
Eliminate all products the contain MSG, aspartame or any other artificial ingredients. If you need to, allow only one day a week that a little junk food can be eaten.
Step Seven
Start to plan your family meals carefully. Start to reconstruct your life to enjoy time in your kitchen with your child.
