Preparation of Herbal Teas
INFUSION
An infusion is a herbal cup of tea that is made by combining boiling water with the plants and steeping the leaves in the hot water to extract their active ingredients.
It is used mainly for leaves and flowers.
How to Make an Infusion
- Use one teaspoon of herbs per cup of water.
- Add the plants to a glass, porcelain, or stainless steel pot and add boiling water. Cover the pot with a tight fitting lid.
- STEEP for 5-15 minutes.
- STRAIN the infusion and enjoy.
DECOCTION
A decoction is a tea that uses the properties of the roots and stems of plants. This is boiled to extract its active constituents.
How to Make an Infusion
- Use one tablespoon of dried herb per cup of water. Add the herbs to a glass, porcelain, or stainless steel pot containing the water.
- SIMMER for 10-20 minutes, remove from heat
- STRAIN through a filter and enjoy.
DECOCTION/INFUSION
A combination of a decoction and infusion involves a specific brewing method when both roots and leaves are being used to make a tea. It combines both of the above techniques adding the root first, boiling then adding the leave and stepping.
How to Make an Infusion
- Use one tablespoon of root per cup of water.
- SIMMER for 10-20 minutes, remove from heat and
- ADD the leaves or flowers (one teaspoon per cup).
- STEEP 5 minutes with the cover on the pot.
- STRAIN through a filter and enjoy.
